School introduction

The School of Telecommunication Engineering(STE)focuses on modern electronics information, communication theory and frontier technologies. It is the base of high level engineer cultivation and scientific research. STE has 230 faculty members and staffs, of whom there are 60 professors, 53 supervisors of Ph.D. candidates and 158 supervisors of master students. More than 77% faculty members have Ph.D. degree. The school has 2 dually-appointed academicians, 1 national-grade famous teachers, 2 of national Thousand Talents Program, 2 leading talents of national Ten Thousand People Plan, 7 participants of the Changjiang Scholar Program, 1 of the Hundreds of Millions of Talents Program, 1 gainers of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 8 New Century Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education. At present, STE has over 3300 undergraduate students, 1900 master students and 340 Ph.D. students.

The school has following academic and research institutions. Academic institutions include Department of Electronic Technology, Department of Communication Engineering, Department of Information Engineering, and Experimental Teaching Center. Research institutions include InformationScienceInstitute and Institute for Information Security. And the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Services Networks belongs to the STE. In addition, STE also covers National Experimental Teaching Center of Network and Information Security Virtual Simulation, Communication and Information Engineering National Experimental Teaching Center, National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (Joint) for Electronic Information and Communication Engineering, National Demonstration Center (Joint) for Experimental Electrical Education, Modern Wireless Information Network Basic Theory and Technology Discipline Innovation Base, and Shaanxi Fenghuo-Xidian Communication Technology Research Institute.

The school has three undergraduate majors, namely Communication Engineering, Information Engineering and Space Information and Digital Technology, among which Communication Engineering is a national characteristic major and a national defense key major, and has set up a Sino-British cooperative education project between Xidian and Heriot Watt. Information Engineering is a key major of Shaanxi province. The school could grant Doctor's and Master's degrees in the fields of Communication and Information Systems, Cryptography, Military Communications, Optical Communications, Information Security and Space Information Science. Master's degrees are in the fields of Traffic Information Engineering and Control. The postdoctoral mobile station is set up in two first-level academic subjects. Communication and Information System and Cryptography are national key subjects, while Military Communications is a provincial key subject. Communication and Information System is the first batch of master's degree and doctor’s degree approved by the state council. Experiencing the construction of "Ninth Five-year Plan" to "Twelfth Five-year Plan" and "211 Project", the discipline strength of STE has been significantly enhanced, and some disciplines have been close to the advanced level of similar disciplines both domestically and abroad. In the national subject assessment of 2002 and 2007, the Communication and Information System ranked as the second nationwide. In the 2012 national subject assessment, the major of Information and Communication Engineering is ranked as the second in China, and in the 2017 subject assessment it is ranked as A. The school responses to the national "Innovation Driven" strategy, considering "Thirteenth Five-year plan" and the “Three Top" construction, deeply optimizing the college talents cultivation system, integrating resources, attracting many effectives, cultivating future direction to build the new subject architecture. The school is planning to explore new areas, reconstruct disciplines, innovate and integrate in new disciplines, such as vortex wave super capacity of wireless communications, optical interconnection network, the sky to the sea integrated information network, a new generation of data chain support equipment, advanced information technology and the deep-sea communication, network and intelligent service, block edge chain technology, computing and big data.

STE actively undertakes such vertical topics as the national natural science foundation of China, the "973" Program, the "863" Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program, Major National Science and Technology Special Projects, the preparation and research of national defense equipment, the development of equipment model and international cooperation, as well as a large number of horizontal cooperation projects, and making a large number of remarkable scientific achievements. The school has developed the first shooting star trail communication system in China, the first millimeter wave communication equipment and the first ATM switch, which have made important contributions to the development of China's communications industry and have a fundamental influence at home and abroad.

The institute trained a large number of elite talents in the field of communication and electronic information for the national. Among them is a large number of outstanding alumni, including Yang Xiaoniu (the Chinese Academy of Engineering academician), Li Mofang (the World Telecommunications Organization outstanding contribution award winner), Wang Zhigang (the minister of science and technology), Yang Hong (the chief designer Tiangong-1 target aircraft), Guo Deying (the former president of Yulong computer communication technology co. LTD), and Li Qing (one of the founders of Tecent).

In recent years, relying on the national innovation-driven development strategy and the comprehensive reform, STE has continued to forge ahead, leapfrogged the development, achieved remarkable achievements and exerted far-reaching influence. STE established the Security Network Coding Theory System, leading the international security network coding development direction. The wideband wireless WAPI basic framework method (tiger TePA) invented by the academy has become the first ISO/IEC international standard submitted and adopted by China in the field of information security technology. Professor Li Jiandong’s team invented the large scale wireless LAN autonomous access structure and method, which solved the challenges brought by the large scale network, high user mobility and large business capacity. At the same time, Professor Li Jiandong's team invented the multi-dimensional active cognitive resource linkage, and the network interference transfer method of cross-domain resource coordination, which realized the network orderly flow of the dense wireless communication system resources. The deep space image compression chip and transmission system developed by Professor Li Yunsong's team has been successfully applied to major projects such as lunar exploration and surveying and mapping satellite in China. Professor Hu Yupu's team has conducted a subversive study on GGH mapping itself and various kinds of advanced password applications based on GGH mapping, making a strong Chinese voice in the international cryptology.

In the past five years, the total scientific research funds for STE have hit 407.76 million Yuan, and the average annual research expenditure has reached 81.552 million Yuan. Besides, the school altogether undertakes 1378 research projects as well among which are vertical program (608 programs) and horizontal program (770 programs) with 512 national invention patents and 45 textbook monographs. 2949 overviews of thesis are recorded in three retrieval systems where 929 papers are included in SCI and 136 papers are included in more than three districts of JCR. And we acquires 17 scientific research awards above provincial and ministerial level with Second prizes of national technological invention, Second prize of national science and technology progress award and 15 national provincial and ministerial awards.

Currently, STE has conducted extensive academic communication and cooperation- joint application for major topics, joint study, visiting and lecturing, hosting advanced seminars and hosting or co-hosting international and domestic academic conferences-with academies and research institutions in the United States, South Korea, Japan, France, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Our school has established school-level friendly cooperative relations with Kent university, Korea Chungbuk National University and Yuan Ze University in Taiwan. Professor J.L. Massey, academician of the American Academy of Engineering and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, professor Shu Lin, distinguished professor of UC Davis University, and professor Li Shuyan, professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong are appointed as honorary professors. And Kang g. Shin, a famous professor from the University of Michigan, is hired as the master of "Modern Wireless Information Network Basic Theory and Technology Discipline Innovation and Introduction Base" (National "111" Base). Experts and scholars from several universities and overseas research institutions such as the University of Toronto, Waterloo University and Kent University are employed as the academic backbone of the "111" Base. Among them, professor Fang Yuguang, tenured professor of the University of Florida, and professor Yang Weihao, professor of Chinese University of Hong Kong are the chair professors of Cheung Kong scholars in our school. In recent years, we have invited more than 20 internationally renowned experts and scholars to visit and lecture annually, sent well over 80 visiting scholars to attend international conferences and jointly trained more than ten doctors with foreign countries.
